Things have been a little bit sad for us all over the last 12 months. Here at Hope Rescue we’ve been hit hard, firstly with the storm that closed our shop and then the impact of the pandemic on our fundraising and how we help our dogs. We really could do with a pick me up and wondered if you could help us?

We know things are tough for youngsters right now too. They are spending more time at home, including doing their schoolwork at home and not getting out to see their friends. We wondered if we could help your them to get creative, whilst helping to lift our spirits?

Our very special competition is open now, until 22nd February. We would like to invite all young people (up to 16 years) to write a short story of no more than 500 words. We would like their stories to feature dogs. This could be about their own dog(s), the dog that they would love to have (and always ask about!) or a completely fictional dog. We want their imaginations to really run wild!

We want them to utilise all their knowledge from school to help with spelling, grammar and punctuation. This won’t be part of the judging criteria but let’s aim for the best. More than one story can be submitted per person and if you want to be extra creative why not add some illustration. Judging will be on the story only though. We have an incredible prize package and are thrilled to have award winning author Lucy Dillon as our finalist judge. Lucy will be judging from the shortlisted stories read by members of the Hope Rescue team.

The overall competition winner will have their story read out by Welsh comedian and one of the UK’s leading stand-up comedy artists, Rhod Gilbert. The winner in each category will receive:

  • Their story published on Hope Rescue’s website and social media channels
  • An illustrated printed version of their story to keep forever
  • A tour of the Rescue Centre in Llanharan (which can be a virtual tour if restrictions are in place or they don’t live locally)
  • The opportunity to name a Hope Rescue dog
  • A Kindle Fire to read their favourite books on!
